5 way’s to stay Motivated at work when you really don’t want to…

Have you ever just felt like shit and not want to do anything? Have you ever wanted to tell your boss to go fu*k themselves because you’re drained? Have you wanted vodka instead of coffee in your mug at your desk?

Well if you’re anything like me you would have said yes to all of those questions. Let’s face it, it is super easy to stay motivated when things are going well and life is good but Unicorns ain’t real and life happens (even if you’re drinking The Unicorn Starbucks Coffee — soooo good btw)

We stub our toes in the morning and it snowballs. Our kids are assholes and our partners suck sometimes. The commute to the office is literally taking your life in your hands or someone else’s because you just mind murdered multiple people while driving in. We end marriages or break up with long term partners.

So how do we stay in the game when life hands us a bundle of shit and expects us to make lemonade? Here are 5 pro tip’s used in the most rugged of moments life has thrown at me over the years…

  1. REACH OUT

Do not suffer in silence and pick up that 100 pound phone to call someone. Having a great team doesn’t stop and start in the work place. We need to have a solid team of people in our lives that help us level up. Family, friends, therapist and mentors we need to have in our corner if we want to thrive in life. If you do not have a support pack currently I suggest you start building one today. Ask me for help with this.

2. GET PRESENT (MINDFULNESS)

What happens when we are unmotivated? There are two key factors that I have found that control my motivation. The first is thoughts about a perceived negative event i.e. break up, traffic etc. Everything starts first with thought good or bad and thought creates emotion. The second is our limiting belief system which again starts with thought. This is the messages we tell ourselves and usually stems from our childhood. i.e. I am not good enough, I can’t do this and nobody likes me etc.

So how do we separate ourselves from thought or look at it without judgement? How do we not react to life’s pain? The first step is to become aware that this is going on in the first place because most of us are on auto-pilot and have no clue what is causing us pain. The best way to do this is to become aware and to become aware me must become present.

I recommend starting a Meditation Practice Today. Did you know people who meditate for only 20 minutes per day have 30% less stress at the work place and are 40% more productive?!?! Now that is a huge increase in motivation.

3. HAVE DAILY RITUALS

Did you know it takes on average 66 day’s to form a habit? The secret to success and motivation has already been revealed, so why try to re-invent the wheel? The most successful people on the planet are not successful because they are different from you or I. They are successful because of their daily rituals.

What I would suggest is to create a schedule for yourself and write out at least 3 new daily success rituals you can do at the same time everyday. Make sure they are scheduled the same time and place (if you can) everyday to be more effective. If you complete these rituals daily for 66 days they will become automatic and a deep seeded habit. So on the days you feel like shit and do not want to do anything your mind and body have already formed them as habits and will keep you going when you don’t want to.

Here is an example of my morning rituals in case you need some help. When I open my eyes in the morning I start my day giving thanks to my creator for another day above ground. I then engage in 20 minutes or more in meditation. After I am completely present I write our 5 tings I am grateful for and why, followed by 5 positive affirmations of myself. I complete my morning writing three intentions for the day of “what would make today great?”.

4. GET YOUR ASS TO THE GYM & EAT LIKE A CAVEMAN/GAL

Clearly this is a daily ritual that needs to become a habit but because it is so important it needs it’s own category. Staying motivated to go to the gym and eat well is one of the hardest things to do ever but it is the most important in terms of energy levels to stay pumped. We know diet and exercise are the key’s to higher energy levels.

Wanna know the secret to staying motivated to exercise, thus becoming a habit? Instead of thinking about having to be at the gym for 2 hours X 5 days a week, let’s change the way we work out. Set a limit of 25 minutes per day 7 days a week to exercise (not all days have to be in the gym i.e. hiking, yoga etc.). Again make sure you’re working out at the same time every day to become more effective.

Food is your fuel source and what we put in our bodies will determine our energy levels throughout the day. If we are consuming high amounts of sugar (i.e. coffee, pop, white bread & rice etc.), then by the time the afternoon comes we are going to crash hard. Sugars trick the brain into thinking we are starving thus shutting down higher functions i.e. our brains. Moral of the story eat everything you think a caveman/gal would have ate and you’ll be okay. It’s really that simple and you do not need to over complicate it.

5. TAKE TIME TO RECHARGE (SELF-CARE)

Sometimes lack of motivation is simply our bodies telling us to slow the fu*k down and take a break. Look I am a huge fan of grinding and hustling but we need to be effective in our lives not only for ourselves but for our families as well. Do not overwork your body and push too hard because what comes up must come down and you will crash.

It is okay to take a day off and rest. It is more than okay to book you and a hot date a vacation. It is also okay to shut everything off and stay at home to do absolutely nothing for one day to recharge. I admit this is one of the hardest things for me to do personally because my limiting beliefs tell me so but let me tell you it is one of the best ways to recharge the batteries to get motivated. So book that vacation to Jamaica or call and book an appointment for a day spa now!
